The United States Copyright Law
helps musicians make money off their music by giving them (and only them) five
exclusive rights when it comes to the use of their music. Only the creator of
the song may
- Perform their song in public (Public Performance Rights)
- Make audio or video recordings of their song (Mechanical Rights
for Audio, Synchronization
for Video)
- Make new arrangements of their song (Print Rights)
- Make copies of the printed music or lyrics (Print Rights)
- Play recordings of their song on the radio or Internet (Public Performance Rights)
How does this affect you? To legally use other people's music, you need
to get permission. A license is a formal agreement between the music owner and
you that says it's okay for you to use their music. The way you get permission
differs depending on your use. Click here for more
